REPOUSSE DECORATED LONDON STERLING TEAPOT, 1772. Baluster body with cast gadrooned base, has high domed hinged top with spiked scroll finial, and gadrooning around rim matching base. Nicely cast spout with acanthus decoration matches handle mounts. Rococo repousse work on body appears to be original to this pot, however it about twenty years out of date, as this decoration was most popular in the 1740’s and 1750’s. Bottom of pot is stamped with hallmarks “M” (maker unknown), sterling, London, and 1772. SIZE: 10″ high. 3-7/8″ diameter at base. 7-1/2″ handle to spout. 20 oz. 2.5 dwt. PROVENANCE: From a fine Kentucky Estate. CONDITION: Fine. Small marks and dents in body, along with a 1″ x 3/4″ oval patch on exterior at bottom under handle base. Hinge is slightly loose. Ebony handle is slightly detaching at top, grain filled with polish. 9-92272 (1,500-2,500)
