ANTONIO DE SIMONE (Italian, 1851-1907) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAM YACHT “COLUMBIA.”.

Gouache scene shows the white and red hulled steam yacht under sail with smoke billowing from its single stack. It is in rough seas but in no peril. All under dark gray sky. Housed in a fine modern replacement frame with double matte, signed lower right “De Simone” and identified lower left “SY Columbia.” Also flying the New York Yacht Club Burgee. REFERENCE: Accompanying the painting is some information regarding the Columbia. It was built by William Cramp & Sons, launched from Philadelphia, PA. Renamed the USS Wasp for the US Navy in 1898. SIZE: Sight: 16-1/2″ x 26″. Overall: 27″ x 36″ CONDITION: Some crease marks, edges with slight discoloration. 9-91656 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 2012
