EXCEPTIONAL STERLING 1684 BULBOUS FORM, REPOUSSE DECORATED, CAUDEL CUP. Exceptional pre Britannia period, Charles II era, caudel cup with caryatid (female form) cast handles, has fine post commonwealth repousse work representing poppy flowers and leaves, framing a lion on one side and a dragon on the other. Bottom of bossed out plain base is stamped with makers mark “T” superimposed on “S” within a circle (unknown). Sterling standard mark, London, with date mark for 1684. Bottom is also engraved “1684” and “A. R. A.” in later script. SIZE: 4-1/4″ high. 5″ diameter. 6-3/4″ wide. 9 oz. 18.33 dwt. PROVENANCE: From a fine Kentucky Estate. CONDITION: Very fine. Beautiful patina with very slight rubbing to details of repousse work. Hallmarks are mostly clear. Base of one handle slightly pushed in with solder repair around exterior. 9-92277 (1,500-2,500)
