RUSSELL SMITH (American, 1812-1896) “SESTRI, ITALY”. Oil on canvas Housed in a good gilt wood frame Partial signature lower right Signed on verso of canvas “Sestri Russell Smith 1852″ Beginning his career as a commercial artist, designer and illustrator, Smith ultimately is best known for his Arcadian landscape scenes inspired by Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty. In 1851, however, he traveled to Europe and for two years sketched and painted scenes in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, France and Holland. Smith’s early interest in the work of French artist Claude Lorraine can be seen in the romantic almost allegorical quality seen in the referenced painting. Smith exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design and the Boston Athenaeum among others. SIZE: 12″ x 18”.
