Oil on canvas Housed in period oak frame with gold liner with artist plaque Signed and dated lower right “1884” Accompanying the painting is a conservator’s report from Anthony Moore Painting Conservator dated 2012 In the late 19th century battle scenes were extremely popular in France, especially those which portrayed the bravery and valor of the French, and the unflattering behavior of their counterparts. Beauquesne was well known and respected for his dramatic depictions of war craft, in particular battles from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Beauquesne studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris with acclaimed military artists Horace Vernet and Vernet-Lecomte and regularly exhibited at the annual Paris Salon as well as in exhibitions throughout Europe.
