Oil on wood panel Housed in a fine period gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt liner Signed lower right “J.C. Thom” James Crawford Thom was born in New York City in 1835. He studied there at the National Academy of Design and later, in Paris, with Camille Corot. While in Paris he also studied with Pierre Edouard Frere. Frere, who specialized in bucolic genre scenes with children and peasants, had a profound influence on Thom who came to exchange scenes of the French countryside with those of the Hudson River Valley.
