GERRIT ALBERTUS BENEKER (1882-1934) “PROVINCETOWN SAND DUNES”. Oil on board Housed in a silver carved frame Signed lower left “Gerrit A Beneker 1918” Titled & signed on verso, also “Owned by Mrs. Beneker” Gerrit Albertus Beneker, born 1882 in Grand Rapids, MI. died in 1934 in Truro, MA. He studied with John Vanderpoel, Frederick Richardson, F. V. DuMond, Henry Reuterdahl, Charles W. Hawthorne and was a Member of Provincetown Art Association and the Beachcombers Club. Beneker exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1913-32 and in Scarab CL, Detroit, 1916 (prize), the Cleveland Museum, 1919 (prize), Corcoran Gallery, 1919,-32, Detroit Institude of Art, 1930. He worked in the following institutions: Provincetown Art Assoc., Butler Art Inst., Youngstown Ohio, Grand Rapids Art Gallery, Victory Liberty loan poster. He also worked as a painter of magazine covers for Leslie’s Weekly, The Reader, Scribners Magazine, The Christian Herald, and Harper’s Weekly. In 1919 he was painter in residence for The Hydraulic Steel Company in Cleveland, Ohio, where for two years he painted the steel workers of America. SIZE: 12″ x 16″. Overall: 17-1/4″ x 21-1/4″ PROVENANCE: Purchased from artist’s daughter, Jean (Beneker) Kubik. Purchased between 1979-1982. Jean was our consignor’s next door neighbor & friend.
