CHARLES FRANCIS BROWNE (American, 1859-1920) SUMMER LANDSCAPE WITH WINDING RIVER. Oil on canvas Housed in its possibly original fancy gilt gesso decorated frame with gilt liner having some minor chips and cracks Signed lower right “C F Browne 1915″ Born in Massachusetts, Browne began his training at the Museum of Fine Art School in Boston, he also studied with Thomas Eakins at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and later, in Paris, at the Academie Julien. A peripatetic traveler, now most often associated with the Mid-West and West, Browne was an original member of the Eagle’s Nest Art Colony in Illinois, he also was an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago and president of the Chicago Society of Artists. Among his awards include the painting prize for the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915. SIZE: 24″ x 29″. Overall: 37-1/2″ x 42”.
