UNSIGNED (American, Circa 1825) PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF FRANCES ELIZABETH APPLETON AND HER OLDER SISTER, MARY APPLETON. Oil on canvas Housed in what appears to be their original gilt wood frames. Incised on back of one stretcher “Mary Appleton Aged 9″. Unsigned NOTE: Frances (1817-1861) married Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1843. Her father, Nathan Appleton, bought Craigie House, now the Longfellow Historical Site on Brattle St., Cambridge, as a wedding present for the couple SIZE: 23-1/2″ x 19″. Overall: 29-1/2″ x 25-3/4”. PROVENANCE: From a Santa Fe, NM collection; Northeast Auction, 8/2/09. CONDITION: Strip lined around stretcher edge, restored with inpainting 9-91808 (4,000-6,000)
