BASEBALL WITH A SIGNATURE OF BABE RUTH.Early to mid 20th century American. Stitched leather baseball with red and green thread having a faded signature of Babe Ruth. PROVENANCE: Signed letter with history of the baseball from the consignor as follows: “This Babe Ruth baseball was a gift from my Great Uncle Robert Gallagher of Canton, Massachusetts. Uncle Robert was a Red Sox fan and often traveled to Florida to watch the Red Sox during spring training. After one of the games he met Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth asked Uncle Robert for directions to a gathering he was attending. Robert drove his car, leading Babe Ruth (who was following) to his destination. In appreciation Babe Ruth signed an Official American League baseball and presented it to Uncle Robert. Uncle Robert gave the ball to me in the mid 1950’s when I was 9 years of age. The baseball came in an Official American League box with tissue to protect the ball. Babe Ruth’s signature was on one side of the ball and other side was printed Official American League Ball. My brothers and I could not resist the temptation to throw the ball around. We always carefully returned the ball to the box. Over the years the box deteriorated and was discarded. I put the baseball in a plastic container and you can still see Babe Ruth’s signature. I brought the ball to a local Leland’s sports memorabilia auction and they told me that the good news is that the signature is authentic but that the baseball is in fair condition.” CONDITION: Minor surface splits. Darkened and faded. 7-70691 (1,500-2,500) – Lot 2649
