Large oil on canvas folk portrait of a woman wearing a black dress with lace collar and mourning pin. Her daughter stands in front of her in a red dress. Both hold a rose together. The child wears a coral necklace and has long curly blond hair. A curtain-type background. Housed in an antique gilt frame. Unsigned. SIZE: 42-1/2″ x 36″ Overall: 46″ x 40″ PROVENANCE: Mrs. Henry Gray to Emily E. Gray (later Mrs. Henry Denver) her daughter to Ms. Edna Denver (her daughter) to the Springfield Museum of Fine Art, Springfield, Ma October 1947, deaccessioned Nov 1957, to Mr. Donald Howe of Ware, Ma to Dr. Paul Kossey Lexington, Ma to Godwin Gallery, sold William A. Smith Auctions 2001, NOTE: Listed on pg 76 of The Checklist of Stock Paintings in Tomlinson Book on Joseph Whiting Stock (which accompanies the lot along with provenance paperwork).
