VERY RARE SULFIDE KNOB WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON PORTRAIT.Early 19th century, Boston. Attributed to Enoch Robinson & Co. “1840-1888.” Probably for attachment to a call bell. This blown glass knob features a sulfide profile portrait of George Washington. Having a tapering stem mounted in a stepped brass ferule retaining its original iron shaft. Knobs of this type were made in the early 19th century by the glass houses in and around Boston. This one attributed to Enoch Robinson. See Antiques Magazine September 2003 Page 112 for description and similar examples with other portraits. Enoch Robinson influenced building construction and hardware throughout the United States. He supplied hardware in Boston for the old city hall, the old statehouse and three hotels. The Parker House Hotel still has locks, knobs and bolts made by Robinson. In Washington D.C. Hardware was furnished for the United States Treasury building. Robinson’s patented glass pressing machine, was well known to American glass collectors, because of a patent infringement claim filed by the New England Glass Co. in 1829 that he participated in against the Union Glass Co. of Philadelphia. Accompanying this lot is a copy of the aforementioned Antiques Magazine and a copy of Sulphides, the Art of Cameo Incrustation 1968. SIZE: 1-2/4″ Dia, 1-3/4″ h. PROVENANCE: Tiverton, RI collector.
