IMPORTANT J.W. FISKE (1832-1903) CAST IRON AND ZINC NEPTUNE FOUNTAIN. Last quarter 19th century, New York. The large signed cast iron round tray, nearly 9′ in diameter, in four pie wedge sections, the edge cast with scrolling leaf tips and flowers, frogs and turtles. Marked “J.W. FISKE/21 & 23 BARCLAY ST/NEW YORK”. Centering a tripartite cast iron base on which are mounted three cast iron dolphins each ridden by a cast zinc cherub, a shaft in their hands. The dolphins joined to a central staff mimicking kelp. The whole supporting a smaller round cast iron scalloped tray centering a large cast zinc figure of Neptune with a crown standing on a large clam, his right arm outstretched holding what was once a trident (now absent). This example retains many of the original spouts and also retains some old paint. SIZE: 8′ 6″ h x 8′ 9″ dia. Neptune: 48″ h. PROVENANCE: Acquired from an Inn in Cherry Valley, New York in the mid 20th century. CONDITION: Generally very good with minor and minimal rusting. The edges of the bottom pan with losses. Cherubs missing forked ends of tridents, one cherub missing trident entirely. Neptune missing complete trident. 9-26277 (10,000-15,000)
