PIECE OF BARON VON RICHTHOFEN’S ALBATROS C.IX. Framed piece of painted laminated wood from a rare aircraft flown by the Red Baron. It is approximately 3” square and covered with a deep red paint. On the back is written “Albatros C.IX 4508/16 Richthofen” This piece of the Baron’s Albatros was given by G. Krupp to Robert James Braly on July 18, 1930 and there is a written notation by Mrs. Braly on the back of one of Mr. Krupp’s business cards stating that both she and Mrs. Krupp witnessed the gift. According to the notation, the Albatross had been stored in a building in the first airfield in Berlin with other planes being assembled for an air museum. This piece of aircraft has been examined by WWI fabric expert Alan Toelle, who is of the opinion that it is genuine. Only 3 Albatros C.IX aircraft were known to have been produced, one of which was flown by Richthofen. It was a two-seater reconnaissance plane with a marked sweep to its upper wings, fuselage and tail similar to D-type fighters, with a 160 HP Mercedes D.III engine. This is truly a wonderful piece of von Richthofen memorabilia. 4-50192 (2,000-3,000)
