PAINTING OF CONFEDERATE NAVAL ENGAGEMENT ATTRIBUTED TO XANTHUS SMITH. This sepia-tone oil on artist board or paper painting depicts a Civil War engagement between a Confederate fort and a large group of Federal iron-clad ships. While we are not certain where this is, it is very possibly Fort Fisher in North Carolina. It is known that in this Naval engagement a number of new iron-sided ships were used in the attack on the fort. The painting is literally filled with incredible activity, excitement and chaos. The painting is unsigned, however we attribute it to Xanthus Smith. Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1839 and at the outbreak of the Civil War, joined the Union Navy. While on the ship Wabash, Smith created a number of drawings and sketches, as well as paintings of Union ships. Some were done as commissions for fellow shipmates and officers. Many of his paintings were of ships and/or Naval related scenes. Sight Size: Approx. 20″ X 13-1/2″. CONDITION: The painting is in generally very good condition with some overall soiling that should clean reasonably well. There are a couple of small, but not detracting, paper losses in the upper left hand sky above the exploding cannon. 4-9999-2 (3,000-5,000)
