TWO FINGER BOWLS FROM THE WRECK OF RMS “EMPRESS OF IRELAND”. First quarter 20th century. Salvaged from the wreck site of RMS Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence River, made by Mappin & Webb and so marked on the bottom of each. Each incised with the mark of the Canadian Pacific Railway, registered owners of the ship. Recognized as one of the three greatest ship tragedies of the early 20th century beginning with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and culminating with the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. SIZE: 5″ dia. PROVENANCE: Reference: “Forgotten Empress” by David Zeni, Provincetown, MA. CONDITION: Commensurate with being immersed in river for extended period of time. Structurally good with corrosion to finish. 9-21248 (300-500)
