CAST-IRON FIREBACK ATTRIBUTED TO ELIHU VEDDER (American, 1836-1923). Last quarter 19th century. Marked “No 9 COPYRIGHTED 18__ / WELLINGTON & BURRAGE / BOSTON”. The center panel of a tripartite cast-iron fireback referred to as “The Soul of the Sunflower”. The center of which is sometimes titled “The Sun God”. This example in gold paint within a black painted molded border. Produced in iron by the Chelsea Tile Works, Chelsea, MA, and also by Wellington & Burrage, Boston, MA, agents for the Magee Furnace Co. Vedder produced four fireback designs in collaboration with John Gardner Low and Charles Caryl Coleman between 1881 and 1883. SIZE: 30-1/2″ w x 28″ h.
