SPANISH CARVED OAK DOME TOP COFFER. Late 17th, early 18th century. Possibly a marriage coffer, the painted remnants of an inscription beneath the lid appears to read “3N DHM DH”. The domed three board lid mounted with large shaped iron strap hinges and conforming hasp, fitted to the conforming four panel chest extensively foliate carved, embellished with floral rosettes, urns with floral bouquets, the end panels carved with leafy trees, the whole raised on ball feet. SIZE: 31″ h x 57-1/2″ l x 24-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Property of an East Coast Institution. CONDITION: The fumed oak example retains original surfaces. An old patch and shrinkage repair on top of lid. The feet probably later additions. The wrought iron carrying handles, lock, key, escutcheon and hinges all original. Apart from old shrinkage crack and dryness, the coffer is in very good structural condition. 9-98348 (1,000-1,500)
