13-STAR BUNTING AMERICAN FLAG WITH INSCRIPTION ON HOIST “A. R. DECATUR”. A.R. Decatur stands for Anna Rowell Philbrick Decatur; born in 1821, died in 1906. Anna married Commodore Stephen Decatur in 1848. Decatur was appointed Lieutenant in 1841 and assigned to the Sloop Warren at Pensacola. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was a Commander in 1861, later a Captain in 1867 and eventually retiring as a Commodore. This most certainly was one of his flags used in the early portion of his lifelong career in the U.S. Navy. This handmade flag dates from the early to mid 19th century. It has a canton arrangement of three rows of stars; four, five, four in configuration. SIZE: 34-1/2” on the hoist, 67” on the fly. CONDITION: Flag exhibits good color but shows plenty of wear, usage and period restorations. Obviously this was cherished by one or various members of the Decatur family as it exhibits various early repairs. Included are small squares of white and red stripes that were hand replaced at some point in time and numerous hand stitching restorations done at the point of “mothing”. There is still some “mothing” damage on the flag, all of which adds tremendously to this flag’s character. A very scarce 19th century, 13-star flag with a great family history 9-97951 (2,000-10,000)
