REVOLUTION AND ORDER: A GREAT POLITICAL RARITY. CODE HENRY: Au Cap-Henry: Chez P. Roux (n. d.). . Thick Octavo, three-quarter vellum over marbled boards. A stately copy, tight and clean, the spine label and decorative border with a deep bold impression. The first revolution in the western hemisphere led to the defeat of Britain and the establishment of the United States of America. In 1791, the slave revolt in what is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic began in earnest and ultimately concluded in 1804. The final extrusion of the French represented the second successful revolution in the Western hemisphere and the first successful slave rebellion. Amidst this turbulence, the former slave Henry Christophe (1767-1820) triumphed and declared himself King of the Northern and Western regions of this Caribbean Island. King Henry, despite his despotism, envisioned a nation governed by law honoring the rights of man. These goals sought to unite the diverse racial population of the largest slave importer in the New World. Striving to derive the best of English and French law, Henry declared himself King. Following the 1811 Constitution of Faith (4/6/1811), he created a nobility (see ARMORIAL OF HAITI, 2005 for the reproduction of 92 coats of arms assigned to the newly created nobility – see also the two woodcuts, this volume.). The King charged the nobility with the creation of laws to govern with the Compte de Limonade, Le Secretaire d’Etat, Ministre des Affaires Estrangeres, signing the ORDONNANCE DU ROI on behalf of Henry (3 pp). This copy inscribed from “??Thom’s to B. L. Lear.” on the half title. Benjamin Lear’s father, Tobias Lear, was dispatched to Santo Domingo in 1805 and was suspiciously received (In the midst of ceaseless conflict and constant rebellion, the King ended his life by putting a silver bullet through his brain). King Henry served as the model for the Emperor Jones in the play authored by Eugene O’Neil. Henri Christophe is, as well, the subject of Derek Walcott’s book of the same title. A partial collation and description of this book are found at the Boston Public Library. In a 2007 e-mail, the Boston Public Library concluded that the three other copies of this book cited in holdings in libraries worldwide could not be found, leaving the Boston Public Libraries’ copy the sole survivor.
