IVAN FEDOROVICH CHOULTSE (Russian, 1877-1932) “SOIR D’ HIVER (FINLANDE)”. Outstanding oil on canvas winter sunset scene shows a house with connected buildings on a hillside with two Evergreens. At the top of the hill is a line of tall Evergreens all under a bright sunset which is reflected on puffy clouds in colors of yellow, orange and purple. A small area of blue sky is seen over home. The hill, trees and house are covered with a recent thick blanket of snow. A cascading stream flows down the hill to the foreground. Signed lower right. Housed in what appears to be its original gilt molded wood frame. Title on center stretcher. PROVENANCE: Woolworth Collection, Monmouth, Maine (FW Woolworth, Dept. Store). SIZE: 25-3/4” x 32”. CONDITION: A 1” slit in upper center sky, a small singed area at bottom center which needs touchup. Otherwise very good. 9-72624 (30,000-50,000)
