OUTSTANDING PAIR OF PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKETS “WM. DOWNING 1804”. One numbered “55” and the other is “56”. The black bucket has a red, pink and white scrolled leaf decorative banner with black lettering “Wm Downing” which frames the date and number. Pink upper and bottom rings. Black painted leather handles have newer leather reinforcements at rings. These buckets were found in Kennebunk, Maine and comes with family history indicating that they were given by Ida Elwell who lived on Brown St. in the Carrie Emmons house circa 1930-40 by James A. MacDonald. It is believed that Mrs. Elwell’s maiden name was Downing. SIZE: 12″ h and 12-12/2″ h to top of rims. CONDITION: Generally very good. Some repair to handles as indicated above. 9-27858 (5,000-10,000)
