FINE PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKET “LEWIS BARNES NO 1 1789”. Outstanding paint decoration as follows: The front in black with burning tree in black oval with “No 1” surrounded by a top banner in shellacked white with red and blue border. The bottom of the oval “Federal F. S” (Federal Fire Society) with the date “1789” below. The bottom rim and top rim in red. The back side with alternating vertical striping in red, white and black. There are a total of fourteen stripes. This striping is typical of buckets found in the Portsmouth, NH area. PROVENANCE: Dianne Halperin Antiques, Wiscasset, Maine. SIZE: 12″ h. CONDITION: Handle missing, one separated ring present. Top rim has paint loss due to excessive rubbing. Rest of bucket is in remarkably good condition. 9-27860 (4,000-6,000)
