AFTER EDWARD SAVAGE (American, 1761-1817) LIBERTY-GODDESS OF YOUTH GIVING SUPPORT TO THE “BALD EAGLE”. Outstanding early watercolor shows Liberty clad in flowing white draperies and a garland of spring flowers, the newly embodied goddess tramples the symbols of monarchy: a key, the medal and garter of a royal order, and a broken scepter. The eagle, symbol of the Republic, descends on shafts of light, to be nourished by Liberty. The flag of the union, topped by a liberty cap, is visible through the clouds of war, which spew lightning to drive the British fleet from Boston Harbor. Behind is seen a domed building next to a body of water with several sailing ships. On the back is an original penned label with the following: “Liberty in the form of the “Goddess of Youth” giving support to the “Bald Eagle”. Copied by Rachael Lincoln and given by her to her daughter Emily Gilbert”. Housed in what appears to be its original gilt molded wood frame. SIGHT SIZE: 22-3/4” x 14”. CONDITION: Good, some toning. There is evidence of a cut line in the left corner but intact. 9-27116 (2,000-3,000)
