THADDEUS WELCH (American, 1844-1919) LOUIS PRANG’S DAUGHTER AND GRANDCHILDREN. Outstanding oil on board family portrait scene shows a young woman in white dress and yellow hat standing beside two daughters, one placing a wreath of flower around a small lamb and the other daughter standing next to their dog. They stand in a green grass area between two stone walls with blossoming apple trees framing a clearing which shows the family homestead. Signed lower left “T. Welch 85”. Index card on back gives history of people in the painting as follows: “Rosa Prang Heinzen 1853-1943 daughters of Louis Prang wife of Karl Heinzen (son of Karl Heinzen German Rev.) With daughters Henriette 1879-1956 and Rosa Helen born 1884-1973”. Housed in a fine gesso decorated period frame. PROVENANCE: Descended through the Louis Prang Family. Never offered until now. Louis Prang was one of the foremost American lithographers from the 19th Century. SIZE: 13-1/2” x 10-1/4”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-27068 (10,000-15,000)
