LUIGI ROBERTO (Italian, 1845-1910) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE U.S.S. CONGRESS. Gouache portrait shows a steam and sail frigate moored facing left in Naples Harbor. Fine rendering of the three-mast two-stack black hull ship having partial sails up. Several lifeboats are attached with one moored to side. Sixteen people are shown on deck. Mount Vesuvius is seen in background. Signed lower left “L. Roberto Napoli, 1886” identified at bottom of painting “U.S.S. Congress”. Housed in a replacement stained wood frame with white liner. Examples of this artist’s work can be seen at the Peabody Museum of Salem. PROVENANCE: A CT estate. SIGHT SIZE: 17-1/4” x 25-1/4”. CONDITION: Vertical foxing line at right side, with some restoration. Good. 9-94610 (1,000-1,500)
