Additional Information: We have attained further information on this fine violin and case. Mrs. Thornsjo’s former husband told her that “this violin was purchased in the 30s from Karl Scheurer for $500. Mr. Scheurer has been concert master of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra under Ormandy. He was the direct descendant of generations of court musicians. he represented that the violin was more than 60 years of age and was made by a prominent firm in Cologne, Germany. The label in this violin at time of purchase supported this representation. Mr. Scheurer also said he had played this violin under Ormandy beacause of its mellow quality, especially in lower ranges, when Mr. Ormandy wanted that sound. The current label was a serious mistake made at a later date when the instrument was “cleaned”. Neither bow nor the case are original to this violin”.
