IMPORTANT PICTORAL HOOKED RUG. Circa 1950. The center wrought with the makers’ names and dates: “Designed by G. GRISSELL MANN Designed & begun Oct. 6th 1947 / Hooked by BLANCH E. MANN Completed Oct 6th 1950”. The center flanked by opposing coconut palm trees and illuminated chamber sticks. The rug hooked overall with apparently random panels depicting floral sprays interspersed with a scene of rooster in farmyard, woodcock in marsh setting, lobster, seagull in flight, crab, leaping fish; some lesser panels wrought with snails, butterfly, teacups with saucers, hourglass with shooting star, etc. Each panel wrought in vibrant, rich and variegated yarns. Hooked around the edges of the rug is the poem “Happiness” by Isabelle Bryans Longfellow, the text of which reads: “Never ask of happiness that you see it come trumpeting / Led in full parade, marching to a drum. / Seldom will it pass for more than fragment of the whole — / A small flag, a brief horn, a drum’s faint roll. / So hearken down the least day, wherever it may be, / Watching lest a plume pass, and you not see!” Poem appeared in Good Housekeeping magazine in 1947.
