ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “LAOMENE”. Oil on canvas laid on board. This painting portrays the sailing ship and sea in the artist’s finest period with highly detailed sails, rigging, crew members, sea and sky. Scene shows a black and gray hulled three-mast ship sailing right to left in full sail on a nice light and dark colored ocean. Ten people on board and the ship having the name on front bow. Central mast flies red and white pennant. Identified in the Sniffen Checklist page 180 as “Ship, British, Built in 1880 in Liverpool by W.H Potter, Owner was H. Fernie. Home Port was Liverpool.” Signed and dated “1883” lower right and with address. SIZE: 22″ x 35-3/4″. CONDITION: Very good, with some minor conservation, primarily in the sky area. 9-25282 (15,000-20,000)
