RARE CASED SET OF AMERICAN CIVIL WAR PERIOD MEDICAL STAFF DRESS EPAULETS. A wonderful cased pair of extremely rare field grade Civil War medical staff officer’s dress epaulets. Both are made of gilt cloth with heavy twisted wire fringe and gilt brass crescents. Each bears an early period 2-piece high domed eagle button. The gilt embroidered pillows are ornately decorated with a laurel leaf wreath encircling a the silver embroidered old English letters “M.S.” The undersides are of bright red patent leather with red silk pads and brass hardware. The rank insignia, once pinned to each shoulder board is now missing. The set of extra rich epaulets are cased in a japanned tin case with an oval interior compartment, hinged lid and closing latch. No markings are found. CONDITION: Fine, the epaulets show very little tarnish and remain quite bright. Each shoulder board shows the evidence of pinned rank insignia, now missing. The undersides are excellent. The tin case is also excellent with light exterior scratching and minor losses to finish. 4-45409 CW (3,500-4,500)
