*WINCHESTER MODEL 70 EXPERIMENTAL BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 25 Special. Standard grade featherweight rifle with 22” tapered bbl, ramp front sight with hood, folding middle sight and receiver sight, mounted in a checkered 1-pc stock with high comb and checkered steel buttplate with sling swivels. Accompanied by a Winchester letter dated March 25, 1979 over the signature of Alan R. Peck, Manager Arms Product Planning confirming the authenticity of a Model 70 marked 25 Cal. Special as a Winchester Research and Development rifle. He does not specifically identify any rifle. He states the work was done “As a part of the US Government’s Project Salvo” in the early 1950’s. Also accompanying is a copy of page 299 of “THE RIFLEMAN’S RIFLE” by Roger C. Rule which pictures three of these experimental rifles, one of which is a 25 Cal. Special from the Collection of Joe Vanietti, the same individual addressed in the letter from Mr. Peck. The rifle pictured does not appear to be the same rifle as described here. The bolt has the serial number engraved on the middle lug rather than the bottom as normal. SN 255318. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Retains virtually all its original finish to both metal and wood except the trigger guard, which is a gray metal color. Bright shiny bore. 4-48490 JR635 (5,000-10,000)
