*WINCHESTER MODEL 70 EXPERIMENTAL BOLT ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 22/T-65 multiple bullet ctge. Standard grade Model 70 with 21” stainless steel bbl with matte finish. Receiver is also matte finished, mounted in a nicely figured 1-pc stock with checkered forearm and pistol grip with checkered steel buttplate and sling swivels. There is no provision for a front sight, rear dovetail is empty and receiver is mounted with a Lyman 57WJS receiver sight. The bolt has the serial number in electric pencil on the middle lug and is missing the extractor. Accompanied by a letter from Winchester dated August 18th, 1978 over the signature of Alan R. Peck, the manager of Arms Product Planning identifying this rifle as authentic and used for cartridge development. This rifle is pictured on page 304 of “THE RIFLEMAN’S RIFLE” by Roger C. Rule. Although it is identified as SN 277805 (a 22 Cal. Spcl rifle also offered elsewhere in this auction), close examination of the photo reveals particular identifying marks found on this rifle. Also accompanying is a Winchester letter dated March 25, 1979 over Mr. Peck’s signature, giving general information about these test rifles. One paragraph states that “the work was done as part of the U.S. Government’s Project Salvo” and that they were classified as the homologous series. SN 248869. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Retains virtually all its original factory finish to both metal and wood with light handling and use nicks and scratches on the wood. Brilliant shiny bore. 4-48492 JR633 (5,000-10,000)
