UNIDENTIFIED BREECHLOADING CONVERSION HALF STOCK RIFLE. NSN. 38CF Cal. 28-1/4” oct bbl. The conversion is a primitive copy of the Springfield trapdoor mechanism with a locking pin operated by a button on the left side of the breechblock. The very long firing pin is spring-loaded and retained by a large screw on the right side of the block. The hinge is soldered to the top of the bbl. The orig percussion drum was removed and the hole filled with a blank plug. The maple stock has a distinct tiger stripe. The bbl has an iron under-rib with brass thimbles. The stock mountings are brass except for the wear plate and cheekpiece decorations which are German silver. The ramrod is a replacement. CONDITION: Heavy brown patina overall with light to moderate pitting. Brass parts also have a heavy patina. Wood has normal dents and scratches. Mechanically fine. Wm.
