CHARLES SIDNEY RALEIGH (American, 1830-1925) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE “ALINE”. Outstanding large oil on canvas ship portrait of the “Aline” sailing right to left having three masts with bottom sails up flying the American flag off stern and ship pennant off middle mast. Black hull with gold trim. The deck having thirteen crew members. The ship sails through a pinkish/green ocean with white caps and there is a large rock with light house and steamship off port bow. Several sails and land is seen off stern. Signed lower left “C. S. Raleigh 1886”. Housed in a fine gilt decorated wide replacement frame. Back stretcher having an old Vose Galleries of Boston label. PROVENANCE: Rankin Estate, Annapolis, Maryland. Vose Galleries, Boston, MA. Purchased at Marine Arts Gallery, Salem, Massachusetts, 1985. SIZE: 26” x 40”. CONDITION: Relined, very good.
