PERCY A. SANBORN (American, 1849-1929) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE BARQUE JOHN E. HOLBROOK. Outstanding unsigned oil on canvas ship portrait of the John E. Holbrook showing the three-mast ship sailing left to right under full sail. The name is emblazoned on the stern and there are eleven people on deck. Each mast with flags and the American flag off back mast. A pilot boat is seen off to the left and a point of land with lighthouse is seen on right side. A hand written legend on bottom edge states “Barque John E. Holbrook, New York, Henry E. Brown, Master, Entering Havre, 1866.”. Housed in its original black stained oak frame with gold liner. PROVENANCE: From a central Maine home. Descended through the family which originally commission the painting. Never before offered. SIZE: 14” x 20”. CONDITION: Very good in original condition with surface dirt – would brighten with cleaning. 9-74695 HP (20,000-25,000)
