UNSIGNED (American, 19th/20th Century) “THE JAM AT GERRY’S ROCK, PENOBSCOT RIVER, MAINE”. Oil on canvas laid on masonite historic Maine scene shows the incident involving the rescue of loggers involved in the log jam at Gerry’s rock on the Penobscot River in northern Maine. The scene shows a waterfall area with log raft stuck at the top of the falls having a person being pulled across to safe ground on a wire harness. There are four figures left on the raft and there are eleven on the safety of the ledges but one has fallen into the river. Six men are seen on an abutment on the left side raising their hats to commend the effort. A wonderful depiction of this tragic historic event which was idolized in a well known Maine folk song titled “The Jam on Gerry’s Rock”. Housed in a period gesso decorated frame which is “as is”. SIZE: 18-1/2″ x 23″. CONDITION: In need of cleaning. There are some folds in the canvas that are apparent at the corners when it was laid down and one corner with a small bite out of it. Otherwise good. 9-95426 (500-1,000)
