UNSIGNED (American, Early 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF A SHIP CAPTAIN. Oil on canvas half portrait of a gentleman wearing a deep blue coat with brass buttons holding his hand inside his coat. He wears a white shirt and sits in a scrolled back crested chair. This is purported to be M. Vandeau, a ship captain from the Salem/Beverly, Massachusetts area. Housed in what is probably its original gilt frame decorated with oak leaves and acorns. Frame has an old label indicating its owner as “Mrs. Geo. A. Appleton 5 Dane St. Beverly, MA”. SIZE: 33” x 27-3/4”. CONDITION: Relined, restored with inpainting. Very good. 9-74576 LG (7,500-12,500)
