SCRIMSHAW PAN-BONE AND WHALE’S TOOTH HAT RACK, PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY RORY CALHOUN. The carved pan-bone depicting a cutting chart of a sperm whale inscribed within a rectangular panel “By Captain Albert Robbins New Bedford-Mass.” Further inscribed in the lower right corner: “Taken from a 40 barrel sperm whale 1866.” Inscribed above the whale’s tail: “BARK ALICE KNOWLES EN ROUTE TO THE SANDWICH ISLANDS 1868” flanked by scrimshawed teeth scribed with the name “Newson” the outsides depicting whale below which is written “SHIP’S CHANDLERS” the right tooth scribed “PURVEYOR’S TO THE NORTHERN WHALE FISHERIES,” all mounted on a shaped oak backboard faced with a hammered copper art nouveau sheet. Affixed to the mounting board on the back is a fragment of a certificate of authenticity from the letterhead of: “William P. Fisk & Co, Manufacturers and Dealers in Sperm and Whale Oil, Sperm Candles, Oil Soap, etc. No. 13 Long Wharf.” Dated: “Boston, July 8th 1940.” Reads: “Mr. Calhoun, HAT RACK MADE OF SPERM WHALE RIB & TEETH. Artist: Capt. Albert Robbins, New Bedford & Honolulu, History: Made for Newson Ship Chandler of Port of N.B. Dated 1868 and made from the rib of a 40 barrel Sperm wale MADE ON BARK ALICE KNOWLES en route to the SANDWICH ISLANDS 1868. NOTE* Capt Robbins represented the Port of New Bedford during the Paris Exposition, and would scrimshaw and carve for the visitors. Queen Victoria was given Robbins work on her visit to Canada. NEWSON USED THIS HAT RACK AT THEIR OFFICE UNTIL 1902.” Also there is a Marine Mammals Act stamp. SIZE: 6-1/2”h x 24”l x 7”d. CONDITION: Hat rack in overall very nice condition, with good color, green glass eye of whale has been damaged, backboard and copper plate with nice old patina, letter and other labels on back of backboard in readable condition, iron hanging brackets appear original. 9-90592 LG (15,000-25,000)
