1893 STEIFF MONKEY “AFFEN”. A spectacular early Steiff toy of the earliest period, circa late 1800s. Pictured in the 1892 FILZ-SPIELWEAAREN-FABRIK catalog (pg 12) as number 48. This amazing fellow is most appealing. Dark brown felt covered monkey with non-jointed body, red felt waistband with outstretched legs. He holds an orange felt ball between the two front legs. He has a vertical center seam down the center of front of face, black bead eyes and a stitched horizontal mouth. He has a thick head of hair and beard made from rabbit fur, and a yarn tuft at the tip of his tail. Quite an unbelievable find, and a must have for one who treasures Steiff toys. SIZE: Seated 9-1/2″ (24cm).
