Treptow’s Pledge” by the foremost W.W.I War Correspondent / Artist, C. LeRoy Baldridge, U.S. Army Private, Infantryman, who illustrated for the military newspaper “Stars & Stripes”. In France, near the front lines in September of 1918, Baldridge completed this illustration which reads as follows: PVT. TREPTOW’S PLEDGE: Private Treptow was a battalion runner the day last month that the Yanks crossed the Oureg. He had almost reached his goal when a machine gun dropped him. In a pocket of his blouse, they found his diary. On it’s first page he had written something that many a man has since copied. It was this: “American shall win the war; Therefore I will work, I will save, will sacrifice, will endure, fight cheerfully and do my utmost, the whole issue of the struggle depended on me alone”. Treptow had called this “My Pledge” and thereto he had subscribed his name. Private Treptow has given his life that “American shall win the war”. You who are not called upon to die – Subscribe to the Fourth Liberty Loan. This is the most famous and, historically, most important among the military ranks that it almost became a part of the U.C.M.J. – Uniform Code of Military Justice.
