ELMA STEWART (American, Early 20th Century) FIRE AT MAY’S DEPARTMENT STORE, AVALINE. The large oil on canvas scene shows a corner block building engulfed in flames with two fire engines and several fire fighters engaging the fire with large sprays of water. Signed lower left on back of stretcher: “May 8, 1908 Avaline.” Purportedly this is May’s Department store in Freemont, Indiana and this painting was formerly in the collection of the First National Bank of Freemont, Indiana. Housed in a decorated 19th Century frame. The frame having a fine decorated interior with a crackled and consolidated varnish finish to heighten the flames of the painting. SIZE: 33” x 48”.
