KENDALL UNDERHAMMER RIFLE. Cal. 40. SN 789. Typical New England underhammer with 29-1/4″ oct bbl, dovetail front sight and long, orig, V-notch rear sight with some hand-scribed decorations. The top tang is lightly engraved and is stamped “SMITH’S IMPROVED PATENT STUD LOCK”. It has a serpentine brass trigger guard with brass trigger plate and a crescent brass buttplate stamped “789” on the tang. It also has a reverse mounted, simple, 2-pc, brass patch box on the right side of the butt. The bbl has four iron guides with a replacement ramrod. CONDITION: Very good. Iron retains a medium brown smooth patina with a few nicks & dings. Brass retains a dark mustard patina. Stock has a couple of grain checks in the wrist, otherwise the wood is sound and retains most of a smooth even patina. Good mechanics. 4-54278 JR465 (600-1,000)
