IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF LETTERS PERTAINING TO FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. Correspondence from the Swallia family of New York written by Franklin D. Roosevelt between 1928 and 1935 as Governor of New York and President of the United States including a Christmas card in its original envelope. Six examples with his signature, two signed by his personal secretary. 1) 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” Typed half-page letter pen signed by Louise M. Howe, Personal Secretary to Governor Roosevelt, letter indicates that due to an influx of mail, he will be unable to personally sign all letters. 2) 10-1/2” x 7-1/4” Typed letter signed in pen Franklin D. Roosevelt on his personal stationary dated October 26, 1928 to Mr. Clarence Swallia of Cape Vincent, NY. The letter is a personal request for Mr. Swallia to write him confidentially regarding his decision as to which of the two presidential candidates he will be supporting. Roosevelt requests that the return letter be sent to his house in New York City (this seems to be a very unusual request on behalf of Roosevelt for a single person’s decision on a candidate). 3) 10-1/2” x 7-1/4” Typed letter pen signed by Roosevelt on personal stationary dated October 31, 1928. The letter thanks Mr. Swallia on his previous letter which indicated his decision to vote for Governor Smith. 4) 10-1/2” x 8” Typed letter on Governor’s stationary, pen signed by Roosevelt dated November 11, 1930. The letter thanks Mr. Swallia for his note of congratulations. 5) 10-1/2” x 8” on Governor’s stationary, typed letter with hand signed signature of Roosevelt dated January 30, 1930. The letter regards thanking Mr. Swallia for his letter of January 25 and a reference is made to a radio speech. 6) 11” x 8-1/2” Typed letter on executive mansion stationary, pen signed by Roosevelt dated July 8, 1932 to Mr. Swallia thanking him for his message of congratulations and asking him for his help. 7) 11” x 8-1/2” Typed letter on executive mansion stationary hand signed by Roosevelt to Mr. Swallia regarding his message of good will and congratulations, dated November 22, 1932. 8) 9-1/4” x 6-1/4” Typed letter on White House stationary signed by M.A. LeHand, private secretary to the President.
