FINE RARE SAMUEL J. HOGGSON ENGRAVED SILVER PLATE HENRY RIFLE. Cal. 44RF Henry. Silver plated receiver with 24” oct bbl, integral magazine tube, fine German silver front sight and Henry ladder rear sight. Stock is lightly figured dark walnut with early round heel buttplate. Receiver is typically Hoggson engraved with a large flower on each side of the receiver on the front panels, a bird dog on point on the left sideplate and foliate arabesque patterns elsewhere, almost identical to serial number 6065, 1888 and 7009 pictured on pages 36, 43 & 47 of The Winchester Book by George Madis. Top of the receiver has two small holes, one larger than the other. The larger of which is tapped, apparently for an early Malcolm scope mount similar to the one picture on page 41 of the 1985 Edition of The Winchester Book by George Madis. Removing the stock discloses the serial number on the left side of the lower tang with the letter “S” stamped above it indicating silver plating. The buttplate has the serial number stamped inside of the toe. Walnut stock is not marked and neither are any of the screws. The buttplate tang screw is a replacement and set at an angle as there is a broken screw directly under the hole. This screw head has been modified to fit the angle of the tang. SN 4527. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl and mag tube retains full coverage, smooth even plum-brown patina with only minor edge wear. Receiver is fine and retains about 75% original silver plating. Stock is sound and retains most of its custom finish. Buttplate retains 70-75% silver plating. Bore is bright and shiny with a little scattered fine pitting. 4-48630 JR555 (55,000-75,000)
