LOUISA M. BILLINGS FAMILY REGISTER / SAMPLER, ALBION, MAINE, 1833. Wrought on linen with silk thread in shades of green, blue, and beige, depicting multiple rows of alphabet letters and numerals, above a row with the saying: “Wrought by Louisa M. Billings Aged 11 1833 Albion CAH” above three panels, the FIRST embroidered: “Wm W Billings/born Nov 29 1820/Louisa M/born Sept 26 1822/Charles W/born Dec 13 1824/Albert H/born Jan 11 1827”; the SECOND: “John P/born Dec 27 1827/[undecipherable]/Dec 6 1831/Tho Gregory(?)/Alba and Robert/Billings [undecipherable]”; and the THIRD: “Be yours the hand to give relief/And heart to sooth the panes of grief/Unasked the needy to supply/And wipe the tear from sorrow eye/O spotless youth of innocence and truth/My every action guide/And guard my unexperienced youth/From vanity and pride”. All within a complex zig zag and pyramidal border. SIZE: 16″ x 18″ sight. PROVENANCE: From a non-profit institution in China, Maine. Available in this auction in separate lots are two family portraits of William Warner Billings and his wife Amanda Westland Billings. CONDITION: Structurally in very good condition.
