TWO SALTGLAZE BLUE-DECORATED CROCKS. Mid-19th century. The first and largest, fitted with lid; with two lugging handles, blue-decorated with “J & E” above the word “Norton” in script above the date 1853 within a dot-and-squiggle cartouche; made by J & E Norton, Bennington, Vermont. The second, an ovoid 2-gallon example with two lugging handles and incised mark “L. NORTON & SON / BENNINGTON / 2″, decorated with a glazed blue fruit and leaf. SIZE: First: 14″ h. Second: 13” h. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Chad Richards, Camden, Maine. CONDITION: First with some loss to glazing and shallow pitting at back, otherwise very good. Ovoid example with shallow rim chips, small hairline in rim and vertical hairline in body, otherwise good. 9-94686 (1,200-1,600)
