UNSIGNED (American, Late 18th Century) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL HOLDING A BIRD. Pastel on paper mounted to canvas half portrait of a young girl in pink dress holding a small bird on the tip of her index finger. She has bright blue eyes and is seen against a light and dark brown background. Housed in an antique gesso decorated gilt frame. An old penned inscription label from original backing is inscribed as follows: “Daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Coit Webb of Salem, and mother of Mrs. Newell Harding. Died in 1807. Picture taken when 3 years old”. SIZE: Sight: 17-1/2″ x 13-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Mrs. Dorothy Hooper Dean and had been in the Hooper family for over 100 years. Nathaniel Coit Webb was a noted Sea Captain from Salem, MA and documented commander of two privateer vessels, the America and the Hazzard, which were used in the Revolutionary War to successfully battle the British Navy. CONDITION: There is what appears to be a tear in the paper on her right shoulder and arm which does not translate through the canvas. Otherwise very good. 9-95439 (2,000-4,000)
