SMITH & WESSON SMALL FRAME VOLCANIC PISTOL. Cal. 30. All steel, 4” bbl with usual marking on the top flats “CAST/STEEL/SMITH & WESSON/NORWICHH, CT./PATENT/DEC 25 1849”. Patent date is nearly illegible. Frame and sideplates are lightly engraved in foliate arabesque patterns and it has bag shaped walnut grips that appear to be old replacements. SN 6. CONDITION: Sideplates and left link are matching numbered. Right link appears to be a replacement. Bolt is numbered “2”. The carrier was not removed but appears to be original. Right front sideplate screw is a replacement and does not fit. Balance of the internal parts were not examined as they are covered in old heavy grease. Hammer screw appears to be a replacement. The follower and the swivel retainer are replacements, as are the muzzle cap screws. Strong bore that is dark, with fine pitting. No original finish remains being a gray metal color with moderate pitting over all the metal surfaces. Hammer will sometimes not hold at full cock. 4-48053 JR249 (Anderson Collection) (3,000-4,000)
