FINE AMERICAN FOLK ART TAVERN SIGN CARVED WITH A DISPLAYED EAGLE AND SHIELD ABOVE THE NAME “P. CHICK”. The displayed eagle on a leafy branch clutching a cluster of arrows, the body depicting the great seal of the United States flanked by leafy branches. The base of the sign carved with the letters “P. CHICK.” The carved elements all contain remnants of the original paint, heavily applied as to raise the surfaces. The whole carved and painted on a single pine board. We believe this comes from Connecticut and is registered in the inventory of Connecticut Tavern Signs. PROVENANCE: From the collection of John Kenneth Byard (Connecticut, 1886-1959). SIZE: 37”h x 26”w. CONDITION: With original patina and old paint surfaces, the front probably applied with linseed oil as a preservative. 9-90098 MD (3,000-5,000)
