JOE SELBY (American, 1893-1960) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAM YACHT “VAGABONDIA”. Gouache portrait shows the black hulled yacht sailing right to left with central stack and two-masts. The name is emblazoned on the deck house and the ship is fitted with lifeboats and flies American flag off stern and ship’s pennants off masts. Water is bright blue with white caps. The yacht was owned by W. E. Mellon of Pittsburgh, PA. The artist was an African-American painter who lived in Miami, FL who concentrated on painting yacht portraits in Miami. Signed lower right and dated “1933”. Housed in a molded wood stained frame, no glass. SIZE: Sight: 13-1/2″ x 22-1/2″. CONDITION: Some fading and browning to paper. Good. 9-93075 (800-1,200)
